Spiritual Direction at Shalom Place

New Resource- Handbook for Spiritual Directees

If you answered "yes" to any of these questions, then you could probably benefit from spiritual guidance. Please read on.

Note: if the kind of interaction described below is more than you seek, check out our page on spirituality consultations. Spiritual Directors who are currently available.

Spiritual direction is an intentional, on-going relationship in which persons (directees) who are desirous of being attentive to their spiritual life meet individually with another person (the spiritual director) to become more attuned to God's presence in all of life. The spiritual director mutually discerns with another and affirms how God is present in life experiences. Together, they notice how these experiences touch the directee affectively, and interpret them in relationship with God.

Spiritual direction does not imply that the director tells the directee what to do or not to do. The term, "direction," implies an attentiveness to the directions in which the Spirit is working in the directee's life.

How can this kind of "intentional, on-going relationship" happen on the Internet?

There is no doubt that person-to-person meetings are best. But many people cannot find someone in their area. That is why we now make this opportunity available over the Internet.

A typical session will consist of a preparation reflection which the directee submits via e-mail (or snail mail, if preferred) and a 45 minute phone session with the director to process this and anything else the directee wishes to discuss. (Check out a sample preparation.)

How often do these meetings take place?

Once a month is common, although there are times when it is better to meet more often, or less. The directee and director work out a schedule of meetings.

Must one be a Catholic to participate?

No, this ministry is open to all. Please check our listing of available spiritual directors to see which one has the background and experience which is a good match for your needs.

How about experience: is this for beginners, or for people well along in the spiritual journey?

Anyone can benefit from spiritual direction. The depth of sharing and the issues discussed depends almost entirely on the directee. The director might recommend certain books and spiritual disciplines, but the directee is free to try them or not.

Who are these spiritual directors, and what is their training?

Our directors include a growing list of individuals with a rich variety of training and experience doing spiritual direction. To find out more about them, click here.
(Note: if you are a spiritual director and would like to participate in this ministry, contact us.)

What is the cost?

The fee for each session (review of preparation material and 45 minute phone call) is usually about $40.00 (some directors may charge more, or less)--many directors pay the phone bill in the U.S. Longer phone conversations may be negotiated, as needed. All books and postage for materials you send to your director will be your expense.

Reduced rates are available for hardship situations. Just ask about it if you need help.

How do I get started?

These are the steps we follow:

  1. Fill out the Information Form and submit it ( you may also print it out and mail it, if you prefer).
  2. We will contact you as soon as possible concerning the availability of a director. If possible, we will attempt to assign you the one you desire.
  3. Your first session will consist of processing your Information Form and your Preparation Form, or whatever your spiritual director suggests as an alternative. The time for this first session will be worked out between you and your director.
  4. Your next meeting and exercises will be determined by you and your director at the end of your phone conversation, or perhaps shortly thereafter through e-mail.

What if I don't like it and decide to stop?

You can terminate your relationship with your spiritual director whenever you wish. There is no obligation to meet any certain number of times. All fees are on a per-meeting basis, so there is no chance that you will lose any money.
